Taste of Kiev In Montana - Livingston, Montana

The perfect ending to
a sisters surprise birthday visit: Kiev cake, made from scratch. (Please note that "from scratch" has nothing to do with me, but rather features the baking talents of the lovely Irina, which talents have exacerbated my cake snobbery.) The first forkfuls provoked utter awed silence at the dinner table - a rare feat in our family!

Tomorrow, we savour delights of the visual variety in a jaunt down to Yellowstone Park. Stay tuned!

Neighborhood Iris - Missoula, Montana

We have to
stop and smell
the irises, I said.
Did you know the
yellow ones often
smell like lemon
purple ones
like grape jelly?

I didn't know that
now I do.
And these smell
like grape jelly.

Blooming Phenomena - Missoula, Montana

"A poet must be a psychologist, but a secret one: he should know and feel the roots of phenomena but present only the phenomena themselves in full bloom or as they fade away."

- Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883)

On Memorial Day - Missoula, Montana

"137* years later, Memorial Day remains one of America's most cherished patriotic observances. The spirit of this day has not changed - it remains a day to honor those who died defending our freedom and democracy."

(*Now 148 years later, according to this site's history of the day.)

Cottonwood Fluff At Rest - Missoula, Montana

In between the spring rain showers, cottonwood fluff is flying furiously, careening crazily on windy gusts, captured in foliage traps to rest and perhaps take root.
